First things first, I'd like to inform or remind you that this comics premise was so well received by writer Stephen King that he didn't only offer to write Skinner Sweet's origin, he literally demanded that Vertigo and Scott Snyder allow him to write it, and it paid off as the first 5 issues all of which are extended shine and glimmer with the blinding light of excellence.
The comic revolves around the idea that evolution and natural selection would eventually create a new species of vampire depending on the time and place, and it just so happens that our protagonists Skinner Sweet and Pearl Jones are the only known species of American vampires. Now if your question is, "Do these vampire sparkle?" then my answer is no! These vampire are fierce and literally have no weakness... well almost have no weaknesses and unlike the European vampires they aren't weak against wooden stakes, sunlight, fire, silver, garlic, holy symbols, Arithmomania and even drowning. So what about their weaknesses? Well, that's for me to know and you to find out.
Now what can I say about this comic that hasn't been said? Well for one, the cast is fantastic!!!
I mean what more could you want? Characters this comic includes:
- The Protagonist, Pearl Jones an aspiring actress working 3 jobs in order to pay rent turned Vampire.
- The other protagonist/antagonist, Skinner Sweet... Aka The notorious outlaw who becomes the first American vampire responsible for the creation of Pearl.
- Henry Preston, basically the most loyal boyfriend somebody could ever have.
- Hattie Hargrove, pearls best friend.
- Cashel McCogan, chief of the Las Vegas police force and probably one of the most memorable cops since Jim Gordon.
- The unmissable Travis Kidd, leather jacket wearing 50's teen who is a total badass.
- and loads of memorable characters who'll give most mainstream series a run for their money.
Pearl Jones as seen in issue 16.
Now I can't finish off this review without mentioning Rafael Albuquerque. His art is gorgeous and compliments Scott Snyder's writing even rivaling the gore of Tony Moore's work on 'The Walking Dead'. This is especially notable when Pearl lets loose on those who've cursed her fate, and amplifies the horror tenfold.
So what's my final verdict? Nothing much really, I can even put it into a seven word sentence.
"Go buy this f***ing comic right now!" , seriously though I can confidently recommend this book to any avid comic reader or even casual ones in general, lest you be faint of heart of course.
So After meticulously adding up the scores and figuring out the average score among them all I've given American Vampire a very high score of:
9.75 out of 10.
